‘Morocco revokes Spain pedophile pardon’

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has revoked his pardon of a Spanish man in the center of a case involving the raping of 11 children, a palace statement says.

King Mohammed “has decided to withdraw the pardon previously accorded to Daniel Galvan Fina,” said the statement published by the official MAP news agency on Sunday.

Thousands of people have held demonstrations in Morocco to express outrage at the royal pardon. Over sixty people were injured in clashes between police and the demonstrators.

The palace statement said the “exceptional” decision was made because of the “gravity of the crimes committed and out of respect for the victims’ rights”.

It is the first time in recent memory that King Mohammed has retracted his pardon.

On Saturday, King Mohammed said that he did not know the gravity of the offenses committed by Fina.

“The king has ordered a thorough investigation to find out the responsibilities and failures that led to the regrettable release… and to impose the necessary punishments,” the Moroccan palace said in a statement.

“The king had not been informed at any time of the nature of the crimes perpetrated by that person,” the statement said, adding the king would never have agreed to the release of Fina if he had known of the “atrocity of the monstrous crimes of which he was found guilty.”

The Spanish man, who was jailed in 2011 for raping eleven children aged between four and fifteen, was sentenced to thirty years in jail for the crime. The pedophile, said to be in his 60s, is among dozens of imprisoned Spaniards who have been pardoned by the Moroccan king at the request of Spain’s King Juan Carlos, who visited Morocco in July.
