Yemen: Protests attacked and a deal to be signed

At least one person has been killed and 10 others injured after Yemeni security forces opened fire on anti-government protesters in the country, witnesses say.

The protesters, who insist on the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, gathered for a second day in the southern cities of Taizz and Aden on Tuesday, the opposition said.

Protests have also been held in the capital Sana’a and several more cities.

Tens of thousands of people kept up their sit-in at the main square in the capital, although Yemeni troops used live ammunition against them…

Yemeni groups to sign transition deal

The Yemeni government and the opposition say they would sign an agreement for transferring power from Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to Vice President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi.

Officials from both sides are expected to sign the deal in Saudi capital Riyadh on Wednesday.

The ruling party said on Tuesday it received an invitation from leaders of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council ([P]GCC), who offered the transition proposal, Xinhua reported.

Opposition groups on Monday agreed on the deal that requires President Saleh to step down in a month after signing the deal in return for immunity from prosecution for him and his sons.
